Author Spotlight: Mo Willems
If you ask any student in our elementary school who Mo Willems is, they'll tell you. He is one of the most beloved authors in our community. We have all of his books including all 25 of the Elephant & Piggie series...and most of those we have in duplicate. It is not uncommon to find only one or two on the shelf at any given time-that's how popular his books are with our students.
He began his career as an animator and writer for television, earning six emmys. In 2003 he published his first children's book about a pigeon who really wants to drive a bus. It quickly became a New York Times bestseller and garnered a Caldecott Honor that year. He wrote a few more books starring the pigeon and since then has written many other award winning books.
What I love most about the Elephant & Piggie series is it's written for beginner readers. I can't express how happy this makes me as a parent and literacy advocate to be able to provide outstanding, enjoyable and visually appealing reading material to beginner readers. But my appreciation for this series doesn't stop there because even the older readers love them. Due to the popularity of these books I didn't allow grades 3-6 to check them out because I wanted them available for our beginner readers, but they were welcome to read and enjoy them while they visited the library. Kids of all ages belly laughed and read these books aloud to each other...I can't explain the significance of these books any better than that.
